A builder’s mindset
I am happiest when an idea becomes something tangible: a dependable feature, a repaired object, a useful tool, or a better way to handle a recurring problem.
Beyond the résumé
I’m Julian Matherson. I build software for a living, raise a busy family, and spend the rest of my time learning how things work—usually by making, fixing, testing, or exploring something myself.
My story
I’m a senior software engineer who likes making complicated things useful. I’m drawn to work where the details matter, the outcome affects real people, and good judgment is as important as writing code.
Personally, I’m practical, curious, and persistent. I want to understand why something works, not just memorize the steps. That instinct shows up everywhere—from debugging production software to repairing, building, or experimenting with something at home.
Family is the center of my life. I’m married and raising five children, which has made responsibility, patience, adaptability, and making good use of limited time part of my everyday rhythm.
How I move through the world
I am happiest when an idea becomes something tangible: a dependable feature, a repaired object, a useful tool, or a better way to handle a recurring problem.
I tend to stay steady when a situation is unclear or under pressure. I gather the facts, separate the real problem from the noise, and keep working until there is a result people can trust.
I ask questions because I care about understanding the whole system. I value plain language, honest tradeoffs, and conversations that move a problem toward a decision.
I am comfortable owning work from beginning to end, but I do not confuse independence with working alone. I value useful feedback, shared context, and leaving things clearer for the next person.
The why underneath it
Away from the keyboard
Fishing gives me time outside, rewards patience and observation, and offers a welcome change of pace from a screen.
I enjoy building, repairing, adapting, and learning how physical things fit together—especially when the finished result is genuinely useful.
Software is both my profession and a lasting interest. I like practical automation, product ideas, hardware-software projects, and tools that give people more capability.
Cosmology, physics, artificial intelligence, and emerging technology keep me curious about how the world works and what responsible progress could look like.
The professional side
My résumé and portfolio cover the products, systems, and teams I’ve worked with.
